I seriously hope this question is a joke.
But, just in case it isn't, the water in the pool isn't the same as a the water in the womb.
Also, the baby feeds and gets the suppliments in needs to survive during the pregnancy through the umbilical cord, and when its born that is cut. So the baby depends on its mother from that point on.

Please assure the masses that you are not planing on ever procreating. Did you come from a fence post or do you have a mom? Some babies do not do so fine lving in water in the womb. Get my drift?

The child receives oxygen through the umbilical cord. Once the umbilical cord is cut or the placenta has detatched from the uterus, there is no more supply of oxygen and the child will die if it does not start breathing.
We do not have the ability to process the oxygen from water. That is why fish have gills and mammals have lungs.

You can technically leave them underwater, as long as the umbilical cord is still attached. That's the means for oxygen and nutrient transfer, since the lungs aren't inflated yet. However, the mother would not be able to support it forever.

Or they could drown...
As soon as the baby is born, the placenta stops working, so they won't get the nourishment they need any more...
Mermaid, indeed!
