First general to be president, yet he did not wear his military regalia as president. Other military men have served as president and have followed Washington's lead on this.

He chose to use the term "President," rather than more formal terms that Congress wanted to bestow upon him.

He established a cabinet and attended meetings, making desicions after consulting with the secretaries.
