NYU is a private university, which means that they don't have any reason to give priority to in-state residents. In fact, most such schools, looking for a diverse student body, might be more excited by the application of someone coming from Montana or Hawaii than they would by another local. Unfortunately, New Jersey is considered part of the Greater New York City area, so you would be looked at as equal to someone from New York.

NYU does not favor New York residents over others who apply to their university. They are a private university and do have have any financial incentive to choose one student over another based on location.

Good Luck!!!
