i called bust buy and they said i didn't need to bring in my RAM card, just IDnmber and (tower number?)

Never heard of such thing. Perhaps you need to explain further.

I'd never trust a salesperson from Best Buy any way (or salesperson in general).

You need to open your PC and check the RAM ID Number.

Assuming that what you want to do is add more RAM to your computer and you want to find a matching one, what you need to know is the type of RAM. You don't have to physically look at the memory card. Here's a very good tool to find out the type of memory in your computer: http://www.crucial.com/
