"Sunshine Leaves Matt"
Subtitle....."She's Every Woman"

The temperature had risen well over 90 degrees.......Much too hot for a mid June day. Sunshine MacGillicutty was working hard, despite the energy-sapping heat. By 8a.m. she had baked two pies, washed the floors of her home and done two loads of wash.
She took a wee break after all was done, to re-read a letter she had received. An old friend back in her home state of Virginia, Kevin Dunbar, was going through a tough time. He had just lost his wife to illness. Sunshine could read between the lines....He was falling apart and needed a good friend. "(1) For You I Will consider returning to Virginia, Kevin. Now's the time for
me (2)To Make You Feel My Love and friendship........You need me. She gently folded the letter and put it in her pocket.
She then resumed her work. Now it was time for the daunting chore of cleaning out the barn.A storm the previous week had caused a mess when the doors had blown open. Sunshine worked for hours cleaning it up. By the time she finished she was so exhausted and so dirty that she decided on a swim in the lake before doing anything else:

This is where she was when Matt Dillon, U.S.Marshal and her boyfriend, came riding up to see her.
Matt: " I've been looking everywhere for you, Sunshine." Have you forgotten about the town meeting?" He looked at her with an expression that did not reflect the love he felt for her:

Sunshine started to reply when Matt added:" You know, I like cooling off too, but my responsibilites come first."
Sunshine:"I forgot about the meeting, Matt. No. I won't be joining you." She got out of the water and started drying off.
Her little puppy, Daisie Dixie walked up to her.
Sunshine picked her up and carried her back to the house.

Matt: "What's for supper?" Sunshine tried to explain why it wasn't ready yet. Matt looked perplexed. "Well what HAVE you done, today?"
She said nothing.
Matt:"Well, let's grab some food in town before the meeting, then."
Sunshine:"I just told you that I'm not going. You grab some food."
Matt:"What's the matter with you, today?" She just kept heading for the house. "Well, alright, then. See you later." He rode back to town.
Sunshine packed her bags. She had made up her mind to visit Kevin.
She had much to do before the train left that night. After making arrangements for a neighbor to look in on her darling puppy and kitten, she wrote a quick letter to Matt. She put it in her purse and took off for Dodge.

Sunshine wanted to say goodbye to Matt before she left. When told that the town meeting was being held at the LongBranch Saloon, owned and operated by the woman who used to go with Matt, she thought she'd pop in, give Matt the letter and then leave. When she looked through the window of the saloon, she changed her mind. This is what she saw:

As she turned away from the door, she saw Festus running up,late for the meeting. She asked him to please give the letter to Matt.

As the train headed out of Dodge, Matt was just reading the letter:

Dear Matt,

A childhood friend is going through a very tough time, following the death of his wife. He needs me right now. I received this letter only yesterday....Thus, my hasty departure.
Betsy Morrison will look in on our babies. (The animals.)
I love you (3)More Then You'll Ever Know. However, I do believe this is a good time for me to leave. I will wire when I arrive.
Sunshine

Matt went into a panic.,,,,,"Festus!! When did she give you this letter?!"
Festus:"Well, let me see.....Oh,yeah.....When I come up to the door of the LongBranch she was looking through the window. It was when you and Miss Kitty were congratulating each other over the vote count on that new ordinance. As I recollect, she looked a bit down, to tell you the truth, Matthew."
Matt:"Where did she go?" Upon hearing that she had been heading for the train depot, he ran as fast as he could. The train was just disappearing from sight.

Matt went back to the farm, dejected and worried. When he took his horse in the barn, he was astounded by what he saw.
Sunshine's hard efforts were evident. He kicked the dirt remembering his earlier comments to her. When he went in the house he saw how everything sparkled. The aroma from the two pies drifted through the air. He went into the bedroom.
He smiled when he saw who his two bed companions would be for the evening: http://d21c.com/walpurgis9/dogs/part2/0103.jpg

He opened the closet....Most of her things were gone. Matt sat on the edge of the bed. As he moved her dress, the letter from Kevin fell out. He read it....... He felt compassion for Kevin. He also felt a nagging fear. He knew how unsteady a man would be at a time like this. He worried that Kevin would fall in love with Sunshine. Matt always thought........ (5.)She's Every Woman's nightmare and every man's dream come true.
That night as he cuddled with Daisie Dixie and Gray Lady, he ached for his SunnyMac......."Your mommy's coming home.....Right guys?"
