Hello. I am a nursing student in Delaware and our teacher has given us the task of finding out why the skin around the rectum, scrotum, vulva, and lips is darker than the skin on the rest of our bodies. We have come up with many answers, but none have been correct. I went so far as to ask my og/gyn and she didn't come up with the correct answer. My instructor said that it has something to do with Darwin's evolutionary theory. If anyone knows the answer, please help!!!! tylishat_jones@yahoo.com

If it has something to do with Darin's evolutionary theory, then presumably it has an effect on reproduction and survival. Desmond Morris has suggested that human breasts became large in imitation of buttocks to encourage full-frontal mating among early human beings. We might make a similar assumption about the rectum, scrotum, vulva, and lips.

1. These areas are darker because the skin is thinner.

2. The skin is thinner so that the nerves will be closer to the surface, and thus more sensitive, leading to more pleasure, leading to increased copulation.

3. Members of the opposite sex recognize and search out individuals with these darker areas, and the gene frequency of this characteristic increases in the population.

Maybe.

I think it has to do with internal vs external skin. On the orifices you mention, the internal skin is extended to the outside of the body. Don't know if this could be applied to the scrotum, but maybe.

In an evolutionary sense, humans became paler as they moved to the northern climates where the sun doesn't shine as much in winter. Those with darker skin couldn't do as well when it came to survival because dark skin doesn't absorb sunlight as well and thus they didn't get enough vitamin D. If my first paragraph is right, it could be that the change to lighter skin effected the "internal" skin that was exposed in a different way or not at all.

Good luck finding the right answer! I'm not sure mine is right.
