I want to place a larger hard drive in my computer, then move everything - operating system and all other programs - over to the larger hard drive. The new hard drive will be inside the computer, not external. Is there a program, maybe freeware, that can do this, or is this something that Microsoft Windows XP Pro can do for me? I am fast running out of space and it is causing me problems. Any help you can give is appreciated.

I don't know of any freeware programs that can do this- XP can transfer files & favorites, but not the entire OS and applications.

Complete migration utility programs are commercial products, so they all cost a few bucks- unless you snagged a free copy of Norton Ghost with an external drive a few years ago.

There are two basic approaches.
1) Use a program like Ghost/Drive Image to make an image of your existing hard disk to some other media (like DVDs or an external USB drive) then install your new hard disk and restore the image to that.

2) Install both drives internally and use a direct-copy program to move everything from old to new. Programs like MoveMe, Copy Commander, and PCMover fall into this category. After you've finished, disconnect and remove the old drive.

Barring that, you'll need to reinstall the OS from scratch with the new drive installed (either using a restore system or XP install CD) then reinstall your application software from original CDs, and finally copy back your documents/pictures from the old drive.

I even have very very nearly the comparable challenge, yet my "spare" force is already in the laptop. You do would desire to place in residing house windows on the spare force, because of the fact in case you do not the small force will finally fill up with residing house windows components. as quickly as you positioned residing house windows on the bigger force it incredibly is basic to repeat each little thing else over. in case you have area on your laptop for the two drives, it incredibly is incredibly helpful to bypass away the infant in so residing house windows will use it for a cache or you may shop particular varieties of documents on it.

Or you could just put in the bigger hard drive. Set the jumpers to slave. Boot to the master drive. Copy all the files over to the slave. Shut down. Take out the small master drive. Set the jumper for the bigger drive to master. And reboot.
