In the South, kids are polite and say "Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, Yes Sir, No Sir." I do feel weird though when a little kid comes up to me and say something like "Yes ma'am," but when I have kids, I expect them to respect me and their father.

well, im a female and no, it doesnt offend me. i live near the happiest cleanest nicest place on earth (disney world), so ma'am and sir are exceptable for addressing a stranger in time of need. its better then "hey you lady". or "hey mister". the tone of voice should have something to do with the way it makes you feel and if their makes you feel bad, glare at them and call them ma'am or sir in a deep tone right back

Not me. It's better than being called Miss. I think I'm old enough to deserve Ma'am. It's just polite.

not at all-its a sign of "respect"-used more in USA-than England,-Even Elvis addressed people as Sir-he had a lot of respect for people-even though he was a top star-Paris Hilton could have learned a few things off Elvis- she has no respect for anyone- by the way- shes back in jail- exactly where she belongs. Respect-Jo

Yes....
I always tell the waitresses not to keep adressing me with "Sir" as it is always the case.....
I hate it when someone calls me Sir...
On the other hand, those who are way below my position at work; i.e., (I'm in a Managerial Position & they are Laborours & Tea Boys), when I address them I call them "Sir"...
I think this tends to make them feel happy & important...

When someone calls me Ma'am, I always look over my shoulder to make sure someone's not behind me. I don't think I'll ever get use to it.

no. i know its just a courtesy thing. i call my customer sir and ma'am all the time and lots of them in their 20s just like me. its just good customer service and being polite- especially here in the south.

It depends. If it's a woman anywhere near my age calling me 'Sir', I don't appreciate it. If it's someone in their 20's, I really don't care one way or the other.
