I need a new engine, but my mom keeps telling me that I should go ahead and get a tune-up anyway. I told her that I wouldn't pass emission inspection because I need a new engine, but she thinks a tune-up might help. Is she right? Please help.

a tune up probably wont help much with emissions considering that is an exhaust problem. a tune up helps your motors pistons fire correctly, improving your acceleration, your gas mileage and your idling stability. if you need a new engine then you should look to trading in your car for a new one. it is more likely that something else needs to be replaced like the transmission. without knowing the what your car is acting like my best advice would be to have a qualified trustworthy mechanic look at it and tell you what is going on with it. if you take it to a dealership bring along someone who knows about cars so you dont get scammed.

What makes you think you need a new engine? If you have been told by a competent mechanic that your engine is beyond repair and replacement is the only option, a tune up would be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Huh, a new engine?? does it run well?? emissions and the quality of your engine are totally unrelated. It could be a catalic converter issue, a sensor issues or a carburetor, or fuel injection system issue. Either one of the previous issues I have mentioned might cost you worst case $500 any new engine installed will cost easily 4 times that

I always carry a complete tune up kit with me where ever i go. I had my engine blow 2 rods Thur the bottom of the engine and after I tuned it up it ran for another 100,000 miles on 2 cylinders.

She's right in many cases and make sure you have a good air filter and spark plugs. Then put the "gauranteed to pass emissions" additive in your fuel tank (link below) and get the engine real hot before you have it tested.
