And I know you may think that Im bashing him but we have been studying all the canidate in 2000,2004,and for 2008 ( since we could vote) and Im black and my girl is white and I have never seen her get so emotional over a canidate until Obama.. It was just the other night when he was adressing the ministers about the " silent riots" . She was a little wet eyed and I asked her what was it that was making her cry and she said, not since Martin Luther King Jr and JFK has I seen anyone care about the WHOLE nation (poverty, rich, majority, minority, old and young) and it would be a shame if he was not elected. Say what you want to say about experience or race --- all that aside --- Do you think Obama can help unite a nation as one after years and years of seperation?Or do you still think he's just some regular politician? Cause Im watching all these canidates bekering left and right about 9/11 and Iraq and whose fault it is that I really didnt think about the wars we face at home.

Information Police and Tanto have really great answers and its great that your understanding the question of needing a president to unite the country.. If not Obama, then who? Who in the line-up Republican or not can do such a thing? Even for some southerners to grasp an idea of a black president, if we really think outside the box on what this man could possibly do not just in our nation but in other nations (christian and muslim as well). I dont think that Guiliani even knows Foriegn Policy as Ron Paul states it

I think he brings a perspective that is too often lacking in american politics.

Some of the things he says, which you and your girl react to, have only been raised by candidates who are not viewed as mainstream enough to get elected. Guys like Sharpton polarize and scare people so much that few listened when he put down his divisive rhetoric and actually talked rationally about the problems you mention.

I think that in many ways, an Obama presidency can be like when Nixon went to China. Only a president with conservative credentials like Nixon could have gotten away with opening relations with the world's largest communist nation. Perhaps only a President who is both a minority and a member of the establishment can bridge the divide between different factions in this country.

I think it is very significant that he has Muslim family members and friends, too. He is cognizant of the things that motivate and scare that segment of our country and could be the one to speak to them and Christians and Muslims talking.

I see very positive things coming from an Obama presidency.

Can Obama unite the nation? I don't think anyone can do that. People will always be dissatisfied and angry; there will always be disagreements and vitriol. People can only united behind a cause, and in America that cause has to be (perceived as) an external challenge or threat. JFK defended us against the Soviets, and it was important that we beat the Russians to the moon, not that we get there. As for Martin King, there are still too many people in this country who see him as an exploitative malcontent, the same way many see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton now.

But can you name a better candidate for 2008?

that's a perfectly legitimate question, so please don't pre-attack obama supporters i used to be a hillary fan (i still like her, but i like obama more) but i switched to obama obama's best speeches, which i feel really represent who he is and what he stands for, are his keynote address at the 2004 democratic national convention and his victory speech after the 2/9/08 primaries (see source links) obama wants america to get beyond partisanship, beyond corrupt politicians, beyond negative campaigning. in this campaign, hillary initiated the negative attacks, and mccain was no innocent bystander. Hillary and mccain accept far more money from corporations, especially the pharmaceuticals. obama wants the frightening orwellian politics of bush, rove, and Faux news do be part of the past. he wants there to be a president who doesn't use the Constitution as toilet paper and the bill of rights as a dart board. he wants underprivileged kids across america to see that their country doesn't just elect rich white guys with the standard background. he has an international background and unique parentage that would prove to the rest of the world that we are an open-minded people. that the kkk doesn't run the show, and that the fundamentalist evangelicals don't run the show. the fact that his father was muslim and that he has an arabic name could help placate middle east nations that are upset with us i hope that answered your question. i will support hillary if she gets the party nomination in a manner that is fair and faithful to the primaries. i do not support mccain in any way, shape, or form, except that he is light years better than the other potential repubs. if mccain is elected, i will personally find every single mccain supporter between 18 and 30 and sign them up for military service if you have any more questions on obama, read the Audacity of Hope or Dreams from my father

Oh, you mean like a JFK thing 'cause the more I see him up close, the less good looking he gets. First, let me point out that liberals have divided this country, not Bush. Second, there's just no way that the south is going to let a Black man be President. Add that to the many Whites who have experienced racism at the hands of Blacks and he just can't win. I don't trust the man and I don't like that he still thinks Bush stole any election when it's been proven, even by liberal organizations who desperately wanted to say that he DID steal the election, that he won fair and square. It's just not going to happen.

Your girl is extremely naive. She is probaby a lovely person but Obama is a Politician who wants to be president of the USA he is not mother Theresa nor MLK. BTW JFK was also a Politician, not a saint.

All the candidates are saying that, not just Obama. Obama is just like any other candidate, willing to say whatever necessary to win more votes.

Join her and make a difference. Volunteer to work on his campaign. I am not saying I agree that Senator Obama should be our next president but when one is that taken by a candidate they need to volunteer to help them win.

I think he is a very smart man and I'd like to learn more about him. I'm still undecided about who I support, but I am leaning towards Obama.
