I'm a college grad whose been working with his best friend for the past 5 years, working for his father's business. In the past year (since ive graduated) I've been promoted and making comparable salary to my friends - I'm in management and it feels good at my age (22). The problem is we recently expanded to two retail stores and things have been going really tough for the past 12 months...I'm working 6 days a week and getting paychecks skipped cause we can't make payroll. My marketing efforts are being implimented this month with some of the most creative ideas ive ever had in my life...But the question is how long do I wait on this to bloom before giving up and going to work for a big company...enjoying my weekends, and maybe not making as much but having more stability. I'm terrified of this going under...and also scared of it getting huge without me here. suggestions?

Set a goal, set a date. If A doesn't happen by X amount of months, then B goes into effect. Plan B.

Sounds like you're doing a kickin' job. When you start making and implementing decisions, the answers work themselves out. The first step is to set a goal. What do you want? The big picture. Step two, how do you break it down? Set the dates.

You sound successful. You probably know how to do this. I will say, in my opinion, you ought to get paid. Always get paid. Demand payment or walk. Good luck with your goals and choices.

If stability is what you want then no matter what great creative ideas you have - they'll never work as your not an entreprenuer.

The tone of your question suggests you'd be happier as a penpusher rather than a risk taker. that's fine, but if you dont take the risks you won't hit the highs.

Who wants to be corporate bum licker anyway? is that still fashionable in the US?
In the UK at the moment it's all about flair and taking risks and setting yourself up in business.
Corporate people are well out of fashion, and so are neck ties.

If you are asking yourself and other people this question, it sounds like your mind is already made up? If you are not happy at this point (if I wasn't getting paid and working my butt off, I don't think I would be happy either) then you need to cut loose. It will probably be tough being that you are working with your best Friend, but don't waste your hard earned college education on the fact that you MIGHT ruffle some feathers with your friendship and his father. If he is a true Friend he should understand and encourage your business move! Good luck.

I think you should go with the big company. Sure we'd all like to make the big bucks and I'm sure you'll get raises but the way things are these days..stability is the key.

If the paychecks are not forth coming, how can you call it great? If you are going to stay, get partial ownership to make it worthwhile.
