I have a male betta and am considering putting him in a tank with some bala sharks and possibly red tailed black sharks. I know the red tailed sharks are semi-aggressive, but will my betta fight with them if they're of a different species and not competing for breeding rights?

honestly I'd be more worried about the betta getting hurt. when they're in community tanks they tend to be rather timid with anything that's not another betta. I wouldn't add him.

Should be fine, the other fish are to fast for the Betta to bother and the "sharks" occupy a different part of the tank.

Ditto to Kylie Anne, it's the betta that would be at risk. the red tail shouldn't be too much problem since it stays at the bottom and the betta at the top. As the ballas get really large they will certainly start to give the betta hassles, but as long as they are small he should be ok.

Try an avoid putting any fish with long, flowing finnage in a community tank with a Betta fish because they may be confused for a betta and the instincts of the male will kick in and it will attack the other fish.. also try and avoid fish that will peck away at your betta and harass it to death basically like some of the larger tetras/barbs etc.

Bettas shouldn't be kept with those large cyprinids. The sharks, both types, would likely rip the bettas fins to bits.

Betas of any gender are very aggressive and will attempt to kill any other fish in their territory, regardless of gender, species, size, or size of the tank. A male and female beta will even kill each other if they meet during a non-mating time. It is unwise to put a beta fish with any other fish EVER.

Might figt the red tails. Bettas generally react to other fish with bright and conspicuous fins, such as male guppies etc. They should do OK with duller colored fish.

I'd be a bit worried at feeding time, but that'd be about it. Though some sharks are known to be fin-nippers... and that could be a BIG problem.

betta's will not mix well with any fish at all. they are suposed to be alone.
