Is it not true that sensitive people are target for mockery and ridicule in today's society? Wouldn't lack of sensitivity mean that we are becoming more like machines or inanimate objects?

a lack of sensitivity is due to the perceptions of the world indicating that if you are sensitive you are weak and it is exactly the opposite if you are not the person you are intended to be and act the way society "says" you should then you are in fact weak. sensitivity and compassion are two of the best qualities a person can possess if you have them do not fall into societies trap and try to hide them be yourself more people will love you for it

Based on your question it doesn't sound as though you are talking about sensitivity from a sensory view but from an emotional / thinking view. If you are talking about affection or being affected by others pain then I would think that it cannot be classified as a weakness as it is a naturally occurring experience for the human organism. Sensitivity for the organism is necessary for it's survival. Unfortunately, society has conditioned mankind to destroy that sensitivity through thought and the pursuit of something outside of ourselves. A lack of sensitivity to your environment would be considered weak as it would make you less able to survive. The emotional, thought provoked sensitivity that you are referring to has nothing to do with the real operation of the human organism and is put there by society.

I don't think that society is changing so much in the area of sensitivity and besides, being sensitive is too vague a subject. There's the kind of sensitivity that refers to the emotions people feel about others, other people, animals, etc. They might feel sorry for others, sympathetic.

Then, there's the sensitive person who is easily hurt by comments of others, he is self-sensitive and this would often be referred to as being immature or weak by others.

BEing sensitive can mean that yo are often offended by others. And if you choose to be offended often it can easily disrupt your personal growth and daily functioning and success in life.

Being empathetic can be a better way of referring to someone who is sensative.

We are becoming more like machines, because we live in a society focused around technological advancements. Machines get us around, they do our thinking, they wake us up, and they entertain us. Most Americans would die without their computer, car, TV, etc.

We have been desensitized, because we are no longer surprised anymore. We've seen so many tragedies on TV (Law and Order, CSI, etc) that in real life, they seem less real...fictional. And when we finally realize that they're real, we think that everything will be cleaned up with the sweep of a broom. In reality, crime is harsh, rape happens, and the perpetrators won't be found within the hour (probably not even within two days).

Another reason for our desensitation (if that's a word) is that everyone is caught up in themselves and their own problems. We fail to find sympathy in our hearts for those who are going through rough times, because we're caught up in getting ahead in the world. Part of us blames them for their own sufferings, while another part of us fears that their problem will rub off on us. We have to learn to look past our own interests and just relearn to care. It's an innate human desire to feel loved and to feel compassion. Unfortunately, that desire has been pushed aside for "bigger and better things" that belong to the infamous "Joneses".

Sensitive people are generally unhappy. You can choose to believe that this is a requirement of being human and suffer, or you can choose a modified belief that is a closer reflection to reality.

I would prefer that people not "share" their feelings.

Since I am not an inanimate object, then logic fails.

It's a jungle out there you see...
The strongest do survive. Sensitivity is a virtue that we should better keep for ourselves and people we love. It's sad but life makes you really hard.

I think the insensitive people are the ones with a weakness. To me, it means they have forgotten how to care about other people in the world. They seem to be too busy with their own lives and problems to worry about others.

Being sensitive is normal but not being so is abnormal! If a human is insensitive, he/she is like a robot! Whereas, abnormal sensitivity can be regressive if not destructive!
