A friend mentioned to me that her cousin pinches her baby nose. I was to embarrsed to ask why (didnt want to sound stupid), but why do people do this and what does it do? Does it really work as it sounds strange to me?

Pinching a babies nose makes the pincher feel nice. It works, but do not pinch to hard as that will damage the baby. Also try pinching the cheeks, blowing fart sounds on the tummy, and kissing toes. All those activities promote a feeling of warmth and fuzziness in the do-er and in the baby.

Sometimes you pinch a baby's nose in an effort to clean it out. Babies cannot blow their noses but that does not mean they do not get stuffed up. pinching pushes out muccus and helps to open the nasal passage. A Qtip works better or one of those bulbs to suck it out, but in a (lol) pinch you use what ya got.

my mom told me it's an ancient tradition...pinching the nose of newborns helps to shape the nose, making it more pointy. The reason being that the cartilage in the nose is still very malleable.

I hope she doesn't pinch it hard, noses are sensitive even when the cartilege is as undeveloped as in a newborn's. They do it for a simple reason, babies' noses are so darned cute.

12 years ago when our first son was born, he had to have medications. you pinch the nose softly, which will make the child open his mouth to get the medication in.
Thats all I really know about it.

It causes the child to learn to breath through both the nose and the mouth.
