My bedroom is bathed in direct sunlight from 11am until the end of the day, with no shade - the side wall is actually hot to the touch most of the day! To make matters worse, I have a powerful desktop computer, a TV and a fridge running in there in the afternoons, making it even hotter.
I bought a simple water-cooled air conditioning tower from Argos for about £60, and it did the trick for me, especially if you regularly top it up with ice instead of water. Sometimes when it is really hot, keeping the door open with the back of the conditioner aimed towards it helps a lot. There are some better tower coolers that actually expel hot air from a hole in the wall/open window via a tube, but these can get expensive and unwieldy. Of course, nothing can beat true air conditioning systems, but those will set you back even more!
If that's a little on the steep side for your wallet though, there are a few old remedies you can try. Someone I work with swears by leaving the window open and having a desktop fan sitting on the sill, helping to increase the air flow. Other people have even suggested leaving ice packs dotted around, though I don't put much stock in that idea.
Try a few things, see what works, and good luck! I feel your pain...

Spray the top section of your sheet with water and sleep under that sheet.
You'll quickly learn how much water to spray on the sheet to keep yourself cool.
The idea here is to GET to sleep. Once you're asleep, the heat shouldn't bother you. We use this trick after hurricanes when the power goes out.
Another trick is to put a fan on a chair at the foot of your bed. Tape the bottom of your sheet to the chair above the fan so the fan blows under the sheet and makes it billow.
You'll need to sleep in a gown or pajamas to avoid getting cold.
This one really works. It's better than spraying the sheet with water, but, unfortunately, fans don't work when the power goes out. You could try a battery operated fan, but that could cost a lot for the batteries.
These are both "cool" ideas...UGH! Did I say that?

try a Holmes Tower fan £50 from John Lewis. Just bought one for wedding present. It is about 3ft high cylinder which takes up little room and not as expensive to run as an air conditioner and runs quietly. In my house I open windows on both sides of houseso it creates a cross draught.

i know exactly how you feel!. Ditch the duvet and replace it with a single cotton sheet and have a cool shower or bath before bed. Also, roof fans are notoriously crap so invest in a cheap oscilating fan from Argos and have it directed on you all night. It works for me!

Keep the curtains closed, you are supposed to only open the windows at night to get the cool air, not during the day.

Leave your door open at night, let some ice melt in front of a standing fan, sleep in the buff, and have cotton sheet.
