I heard this on a black gay message board and they said they would not defend or support "white gay rights". I asked them with no response.

I bet they gave no response because they realize it's stupid too.

I have never heard of a single pro-gay rights initiative that was in any way limited by race.

I'm not sure, but perhaps it has something to do with some people's beliefs that black civil rights and white gay rights are mutually exclusive. And, there is a fear that the white gay rights might overshadow the importance of civil equalitynot just for black gays but for the larger black community.

Edited - whoa, reading all your update edits baba booey girl. Just curb your hostility. YES we KNOW you say this on a "gay" message board -- but more importantly it is a black message board. And if the users in the community value their heritage over their sexual preference then that's what perspective they are taking.

There is no such thing as white gay rights. White gay people want the same rights as black gay people. What? Just because we are white, we demand more rights than black people? I don't think so! If he don't support "white gay rights" then I guess he don't support "black gay rights" either. White and black gay people are looking for the same exact rights...so that just don't make much since to me. I think this guy that used this term is just racial profiling and crying out slavery. Yes, white people made a terrible mistake back then, and white people have apologized since then for the cruelty of black people. So just put the past behind you and time to move on and build for a better future! That happened hundreds of years ago, and people in today's society is still separating races in some ways or another! It is time for all of us to stop the segregation and to get along!

Its a matter of perspective from a certain community... the fact of the matter is that the most visibile part of the gay community is and has always been the white gay male majority so other parts of gay culture tend to get snuffed (i.e. black gay male and lesbians) I could get into a whole launry list of reasons why this is the way it is but I would rather not... All I can say is I love all people of color from white to black and everything in between and hopefully we can all get an equal share of the gay rights pie...

Well, I could be wrong, but this probably refers to the general feeling among a lot of non-GLBT minorities that gay rights are a "white thing" (as if GLBT people of color do not exist), and that such struggles for rights are not comparable with racial struggles for equality, but are used to detract from them.

Hmm, he probably has some hatred to white people and gay rights are the one big issues right now concerning rights, and since, very sorry to say, white people don't have any right problems right now that's the only thing he can use.

That's stupid for them to say. Gay rights should be universal despite race or ethnic background. Ignorance is all around us unfortunately.

Most LGBT spokespeople, lobbyists, and celebrities are white...they could be referring to that. It's sad that they feel that way. I want equality for everybody, of all colors and orientations.
