I live in a small community and we don't have many rescources for this type of thing. We have gone through the school a couple of times but they always have the last word and are not willing to be flexable. I would like to start a community theatre group, where we can be flexable and invite all types of community members to join in.

If you go to a church or temple, you should bring an idea to them.

Most church's don't object of other denominations joining things, if it brings in youth.

Good luck!

Try finding a space that already has the lighting, seating, backstage space, etc. that you'll need. A community center or civic arts center is a great place to start. Use the resources you already have--friends/peers who are lighting/scenic/costume designers, set builders, prop masters, etc. to go along with you and promise to be around for at least the first year of operations. Once you've figured out the budget you'll need to rent your newfound space and pay for production costs, pick a show that has a small cast, one unchanged set, and contemporary costumes. This will keep your cost low. Then you'll have the hang of working in your new space, and if you like it, you can continue to expand and grow!

Do it in the park or any public area. Some towns have certain rules on what you can do in public areas and you may need to get permission but they may also be willing to help you get started. If you go about it professionally they could help you set up a small out door theater, but that's a best case scenario. Get together with your friends and do something. As long as you don't charge admission or anything for the play or whatever you are doing you will not have to pay for the rights of it.

Your local library. Most usually have a basement where a community theater group could start. Your library should have the space.

A local Town Hall or Church's hall is an ideal meeting place!
