I'm talking about anyone that takes a study in (history) in general.

historian, however, historiographer is a synonym (rarely used though).

Historian would be my guess...

On a side note to clarify... Historiographer is not one who writes about history per se; it is one who writes about what historians have written about in the past. Historiography is the study of that.

Tigertrot, you are absolutely correct and I am ashamed of myself. I also have no idea where that came from or how I thought it to be correct. I am properly ashamed and am going to sit with my nose in the corner for a couple of hours. After that I will write ten thousand times that "I am a boob," but first I will ammend my answer.... :-)

Most people use the word "historian." Historian, though, is more related to one who is academically expert in history and/or a writer of history.

Someone who's received a degree might be considered a historian; others who's dabbled with a few courses and has an interest might be referred to as a "history buff." Not an expert but someone with high interest....

Annalist or chronicler if you're talking about someone recording history in writing/words.

Biographer if you're talking about someone writing about the life history of a person.

Archivist if you're talking about someone trying to preserve historical artifacts or helps catalog them

Chronologist if you're talking about someone who studies the order and date in which historical events happened.

Genealogist if you're talking about someone who studies family lines (i.e., family trees and related stuff).

History buff if you're talking about a person REALLY into history as a hobby.

History student if you're talking about a university student studying history.

Historian if you're talking about someone studying history for a living (i.e., it's his/her job, how he/she makes money).
