It's almost exactly the same. No prayers, justice of the peace no pastor or priest or whatever. Can be in a church due to convenience, or tradition alone. Afterall, athiests don't believe in god so why does it matter where it's held? Athieism doesn't mean you hate religion and god, it simply means you do not believe in it and don't practice it. Marriage is not not just a religious experience you know, there are legal benefits, and emotional benefits. It says to your spouse, ' you're the only one for me... here's proof!' It's good that you asked this question, but i wonder why. Is it something that another religous person told you doesn't make sense? So then you asked? Again, it's good that you asked but please don't imply that athiests are wrong in life because you think they're doing something which you feel is reserved by god. Which it is not. I am Agnostic, not an Athiest. I can relate to you both.

This is a very good question. I have thought about this several times also. So I called a friend of mine who says he's atheist. I am not--I am a proud Baptist and believe that God comes first in a marriage, then your spouse, then children. Him and his wife got married in the church his mother goes to and they did say vows that said they would obey God--I think that was to make his Mom happy. But he said that even though they don't personally believe in God that they were both raised as Christians and wanted a traditional wedding. But the others that are die hard Atheists would probably get married by a Justice of the
Peace or County Judge or someone like that. I doubt that they would say traditional vows either, they would most likely write their own.

We aren't atheists, but we got married at City Hall. Any judge can marry you, marriage is covered by civil law, and even ministers and priests and rabbis are licensed by the state to perform marriages. Marriage laws are made by the state and they cover things like minimum age and needs for blood tests or licenses.
Atheist don't believe in God, they do believe in love, and families and yes, even moral behavior. The just don't feel that they have to behave in a certain way to earn brownie point with God so they can get to heaven.
Think of it like this, they feel being good is its own reward.
A legal marriage covers the partners in cases of inheritance and property and children and health care decisions. None of which would involve God to an atheist.

I believe in God but know the answer. You can have a wedding in a backyard, park, or gazebo somewhere and not in a church. You can hire a non-denominational minister or even the Justice of the Peace to perform the ceremony. This is a neat question.

Easily, any justice of the peace. It's a big religious lie than only religious leaders can marry people. Anyone can apply to any state for permission to marry people, it's a simple form and does not require any religious affiliation. One of the great benefits behind a separation of church and state.

Marriage is a legal joining in the United States. Without the Govt., your marriage means nothing.
Without the church, you can still get married. Besides, just cause you're an Atheist, doesn't mean you married one.

Marriage has little to do with religion, it is pre-christianity and is a social invention, religion adopted this later on.
A lot of aspects of the 'Christian Marriage' has little to do with Christianity.
Many true Christians refuse to get married in a church for 'Christian' reasons!
