Around 15 years ago I worked for the Post Office as a Rural Carrier Associate it was a job delivering mail no benefits with full-time hours. I did not have my own route. I was told the person was leaving and I would take her place but she came back. I got a transfer to North Carolina after a divorce but I had to resign. My questions are how difficult is it to get back into the Post Office, do I have to start at the bottom and would it be really worth it. I am 47 work full time in printing make $15. per hour plus lots of OT and live on Long Island in New York. Thanks in advance

I don't think they accept people your age. You would have to be 67 before you would receive any retirement $$. I'm 67 & thats OLD.

I started in 1974 as a letter carrier and worked until 1981.

In 1999 I went back, and have worked there ever since, transfering from NJ to the midwest.

The test I took in 1974 was no longer valid. I had to take the test again. In 1999 I began at 13.61 an hour, less than I was making on the 'outside'. I am glad that I went back. I get 5 weeks vacation a year, plus the standard 13 sick days a year.
I have my own route. Check the http://nalc.org/ website for wage information. We are currently working without a contract, though one should be in place by November.

If you attempt to go back, do not go as a rural carrier. The rising gas prices are NOT taken into account when getting paid.
