I like your attitude about not wanting anything too big and powerful. You can always sell bikes and trade up as you gain skills and confidence.

I also second Wyomingrider's suggestion. If you're in the USA, take the MSF course.

The smallest street-worthy motorcycle I know of is the Ninja 250 (aka, Kawasaki EX250). Its big brother, the Ninja 500 is also a good choice and one I drooled over when I was looking for my first bike.

The biggest bike I'd suggest as a starter would be a middleweight twin-cylinder bike, like a Ninja 650 or Suzuki SV650. They will go fast if that's your thing, but it's the kind of torquey power that's easy to control.

If by "barely street legal", you mean a dirt bike you can register at the DMV and ride on the street, the Kawasaki KLR250 is really the only new bike that fits the bill. A Suzuki DRZ400s is a much taller bike that offers more dirt performance than the KLR, but its seat height could be an issue if you're under 6' tall.

A 600cc (or larger) 4-cyl bike is not a good starter bike, IMHO. You'll learn essential braking, handling, and street survival skills faster if you don't have to worry so much about managing lots of horsepower.

Well, personally, I think a motorcycle is a great investment as long as you're willing to put the time and effort into the activity. I'm only 16, but I've been riding them since I was 4. And I still have much to learn. I would recommend, if you're still concerned, starting off with an Enduro. Basically its a street-legal dirt-bike. Maybe a TS125? Then move your way up to something like a Ducati or Kawasaki. Then if you're into more long-term trips, a Harley Fatboy or Street Glide. But remember, if something were to happen while you're on the bike, the worst possible thing you could do is be afraid to ride again. Hope I helped! (:

If you are looking at sportbikes, take a look at some of the 600cc bikes. Performance is approximately the same for the major makers, so your choice would be based on what is comfortable for you and your style.

I would also suggest the MSF riders class. This class is usually 2 to 3 days and fairly inexpensive. It will be the best investment you will make in your riding "career".

I believe most of the big manufacturers (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki) all make a 250cc version of their cruiser style bikes, such as a Honda Shadow or a Kawasaki Vulcan. If you want something that isn't going to intimidate you, that's where I'd start.

no sport bikes. Get something you find comfortable. An older used bike would not be very expensive. Any of the older Hondas or Yamahas would be worth looking at.

Anything from a 350CC to a 600CC will work for you.

Cheap - easy to find - pretty reliable.

Easy to find parts for many this size.
