In case of a fire you run out with your life and dear ones,life only do not take any chances.
But it is not in our nature so keep a bag or two(per person, saddle bag for a dog with water and food) with certain things that will let you survive a day or so, dry food ,water.. change of clothing... and certain records like bank account No., ss no., pets, money-charge card, important telephone Nos and address of friend and relative, ... this way you just grab the bag without thinking and get out.
I would also keep a list of other things in the bag that I may grab time permitting. But remember you can carry only one bag safely you do need one hand free or change the hand to carry things for long time.

Photo's & photo album & visa card & a couple pairs of undies .. coz you can wear the same clothes if everything burns down & use your visa to buy new clothes but you need to change your undies man .. daily

hmmm.....my purse, this box where I keep all my money, and my laptop if I could carry it. And if I still have time get some other stuff!
My mom would get my goldfish tank and some other important stuff like passports and money and cellphones, her purse,
My dad would get my pet hamster, credit cards, his wallet, you know stuff like that!

my dogs and my blanket I have had since I was a baby and my family and my money and car keys and ALL my family pictures and baby pictures and everything and there is A LOT of those pictures
