The war was won when we toppled the government of Saddam Husein. Now it has become an occupation of a conquered nation, as we did in Japan and Germany, following WWII. I say we forget about trying to turn the government back over to the Iraqi's and annex them as a territory of the United States, like Guam and Puerto Rico, then any such attack of any kind is considered a hostile act toward the United States. The people would be under our laws and also our protection. Once that was done, let the Syrians, Iranians, Jordanians and other mercenaries that enter Iraq just to kill Americans try it, it will give us Provocation to attack their country and believe me, it a manner of a short time the middle east would settle down with that big chunk of Red, White and Blue smack dab in the middle of it, and with any threat, it would just get bigger and oh all the oil we would have. Do you think they would really want that to happen?

Although it is a bit late the US should go back to the original army plan, which was never carried out because of the politicians.
The Iraqi's are still a tribal people to whom local allegiances and familyties mean more than nationality. The army therefore suggested to leave local matters in the hands of the already existing strong men and clerics. These men would sit in regional and national councils to solve their problems through diplomacy instead of by force of arms. The relatively weak federal government would be made up by ex-revolutionary guard soldiers and officers to maintain the peace. The US promissed before the war to allow foreign companies to set up industries in Iraq, but effectively banned all but American companies, which has hurt Iraq economically. It was a good plan, but Bush et al ruined it.
US diplomats instituted a campaign of deposing all strongmen, which led to anarchy and also broke their pre-war promisses of freedom and independance to these strong men for not supporting Sadam Hussein. An other plan which I liked was sharing the oil revenues with the citizens so they would have an active interest in stability. The share of oil interest would have amounted to more than is now the average salary, but all this money is siphoned away from the populace and nothing is given in return by the government, which has done little for improving stability.
If my children were dying because of lack of clean water, medical care and power to heat my home I would be up in arms, wouldn't you? For those who mourn American deaths, remember that for every American casualty close to a hundred Iraqi civilians suffer the same fate, they are the real victims of this illegal war.

Perhaps if we go to the Military category in Yahoo Answers, and ask hundreds, if not thousands, of questions about the Iraq war - then the pigs and the pork and the Muslims will realize that since it is the only war going on in the world they can achieve world peace simply by ending it all in Iraq.

First off, Iraq is and never was a 'war'. It is Bush's revenge for acts comitted on his father.
The real truth is that a Christian country can never understand a Muslim world and vice versa.
Saddam knew his people well and he was able to keep control.
There are 3 religious factions in Iraq: the Sunnis, Shias and the rest. The only way this can be resolved is to break up and separate the regions to allow each faction to govern their own people which even the current appointed Iraq government is unable to do.
The people there will never be at peace until this happens. India was divided and the Muslims got their own Pakistan.
We should have the United Nations get together to negotiate this.
Until then, many more thousands will die.

It is not our war to win or lose. If Iraq doesn't have the resolve to make something of their own country, how can we give them that or force it on them? Soon their army and police should be able to take over the security of their own country and they should have elections within the provinces of Iraq to be able to govern much better. At that point, our mission should be accomplished.
I don't believe the U.S. will ever pull out of Iraq completely but should not be there in a military capacity other than special forces to combat terrorism and help keep the peace if things should get out of hand again.

Excellent idea. Use their own Religious Fear as a weapon against them.
Let our Military fight to Win. Their Job is to Kill the Enemy, so let them do it, and stop making rules of engagement that get our Own People Killed, because the Enemy knows these rules, and use them against our People.
Put the Generals and other high ranking Officers in Harms Way along with their People, and see how things change for the better.
This is War against Global Terrorists, and not a Political Meeting.
We must win this War, or we are dead People!!!

In a war game during the clinton administration the military determined they would need 400 to 500,000 troops for a period of 4 to 5 yrs to achieve our goals and that even then it may not work do to outside influences (Iran,Al queda)
So I suggest we either give them what they asked for or get them out of harms way. I would think the military knows what they need more than gwb does. Now then... after saying that who is it that hasnt been supporting our troops?

I believe this is a war that is un-winnable.
We need to bring our troops home NOW.
The problem is with our president, and hopefully reform can begin (if not sooner) when the next president is sworn into office.
I support our troops. I think they are doing what they think is right. It is the president and those in government who agree with him who are to blame-who have the blood of nearly 4,000 troops on their hands-not to mention the innocent Iraqi civilians. Not everyone there is an insurgent-a hypocrite killing their own people along with our troops.
