Depending on where you live, eucalyptus, is the fastest growing, and burns very hot. You want to plant them in a grove so they are somewhat close, not individually , because you want them to grow nice and straight, and be protected from the wind, as that will keep them from growing twisted, and hard to split into wood. There are many kinds but I believe the trees we had were blue gum, and they are so easy to cut, and it is a hardwood. I was in the firewood industry for 17 years, I had my own Co., in Northern CA., and I sold OAK, as the price for that was around 260dollars/cord, and 200 dollars green, meaning you had to dry it to burn it. I sold a lot of wood. For pine, I had Douglas fir, which is the best starter wood ever. I certainly would plant a bunch of oak trees, as that is where the money is. Man, I miss that business.Just a tip, Get a dump truck, it is the only way to go.

Not a tree, but bamboo is being used more and more because it is fast growing and quickly replenishes itself when harvested. One of the big things in the whole "green" movement in construction.
