How do I know whether the brake or clutch linings in my car contain asbestos? The car is a 1989 VW imported into the UK in 1990.

Would the asbestos lining pose a risk to me if I wasn't working specifically on the clutch but was underneath the car or tinkering with the engine?

Also, I was wondering, as the clutch lining is being constantly 'disturbed' as it's brough to the bite, does asbestos in the clutch become airborne easily and pose a risk to the health of anyone near the car?

almost all older models (80's and below) and even some newer models contain asbestos in the clutch, not as many put it in the brakes though. it wasnt feasiable to make the brake pads with asbestos b/c they wear out faster than the clutch. Asbestos pads were more expensive then semi-metallic.

The small amount of asbestos present in the clutch and brakes is of no concern in it's present state. The asbestos in it's natural state is comprised of fibers that are barbed, making them difficult to expel from the lungs. In the brake and clutch, the particles are finely ground powder that is in an inert state. When inhaled in small amounts the body has no trouble in removing it like any other form of dust.
