The 'red moon' that you saw was caused because of all the dust in the air.

This is sometimes called a 'Harvest Moon' because the dust from the wheat etc that is harvested, filters the light and makes the moon appear red and hazy.

The red moon is caused by the atmosphere yes, and also by the sun, as it sets, at same time the moon rises.

Depending on where you live, there have been a lot of brush and forest fires around the nation, smoke from those fires have caused this phenomena. It could also be dust storms and volcanic eruptions as well.

Red light waves will penetrate humidity and dust in the air, other wavelengths are scattered. The thickness of the haze determines how dark the red color appears.
