Yes, but they should be well filtered and have their own area. A smoker has just as much right to dine as a non smoker. Louisiana changed their law Jan. 2007. A lot of restaurants have noticed that more customers are coming to dine, but that they are not spending as much money. The smokers will socialize longer and order drinks etc. while they smoke. Diners just dine and dash generally. You are only allowed to smoke outside in an open patio area, but her it is 7 month's later and very few restaurants have patio areas. The restaurants that do are all overcrowded. I know as a smoker with friends, we aften forgo dining out and order to go more often so we sit at each other's house to drink and socialize. All the while the restaurants are missing our money we would spend on alcohol at their restaurant. Obviously this has been a huge topic in our state over the past year. I think it should be a decision for the restaurant owner. I don't feel like the government should be able to tell you what you can do in a privately owned building. The diner can choose whether to eat at that restaurant or not. If you don't like smoke, then go to a smoke free restaurant. Where does it end? Next thing is they will ban smoking in your car etc. If it is soooo bad, then why do they still sell them! Ahhh the golden dollar$$$$$

There is no harm if smoking is allowed in some restaurants. Most restaurant owners have found that their customers prefer smoke-free environments, and in most areas, "smoker" restaurants are getting harder to find. Smokers are a shrinking minority, after all.
There are two ways this can be done: the owner can allow smoking generally throughout the restaurant or provide a smoking section. The latter requires some investment because the ventilation system needs to be designed so that the airflow does not move smoky air from the smoking section to the rest of the restaurant.
There is a perception that if smoking is not permitted in a bar, the bar will lose business, but that perception has not been well tested. I believe that smoke free bars would be quite successful--there are many members of the growing majority of non-smokers who like to drink, listen to music, and dance the night away and would choose to do it in a smoke free environment if given a choice. There are many who avoid the bar scene only because of the smoke. I also believe that the government should intervene only in the face of a compelling public interest. I'm not sure that one exists here.

yes, it should. I think a restaurant should cater to everybody. If you exclude smokers, that is discrimination. It's fine if they put us off in another room, or area. I agree non-smokers shouldn't have to be subjected to the smoke. Now I am all for non-smokers and non-smoking section. Smoking is a bad habit I agree, however as a smoker I am entitled to enjoy the same great foods that others are.
What alot of people do not realize is that once someone becomes addicted to smoking it's a terrible habit to overcome. I have tried many time to quit, and I'll try again and again until I succeed. For all you non-smokers out there, I hope and pray you never pick up this habit as there are many bad things that come with it..And it's not just smelling the smoke. Cigarettes are expensive, ashtrays stink and you will feel discriminated against in certain places. I have walked away from eating at popular restuarants just because they didn't have a smoking area.

If that's the law then no. I believe in the system even though it has its faults. personally I'd prefer not as i don't smoke. and I've never met a non-smoker that didn't agree. Nor a smoker that said the opposite.
smoking is a very powerful addiction and unless you have been there its hard to understand.
I think what it comes down too is a persons right to breath clean air vs a person who wants to pollute it for his/her own personal pleasure.
From a legal perspective you would have to ask if a person has the right to breath clean air --I'd say yes. As previous decisions have shown that people do not have the right to disturb other with noise or loud music for example.
I think you will notice the people you say you should say so out selfishness because they smoke and can't give any real reasons why. They just sat they enjoy it. and they do due to the addiction. A smoker does not understand how unpleasant the smoke can be to a none smoker.
for the record I don't smoke. but I used to use tobacco so i understand the addiction and how hard it is to quit.

It not a good idea to allow smoking in resturants cuz some people don't like to eat and smell the smoke at the same time, also it would make everyone a "second hand smoke too which is not good.

Definitely not. Smoking contaminates the air, causes a foul smell and the smoke particles land on your food. Not only that but second hand smoke is breathed in by non-smokers too. The foul smell of cigarette smoke spoils the delicious aromas of the food. Why should we have to put up with this loathsome habit. If smokers are so addicted to their habit that they can't go without it for a couple of hours then they should either eat at home or go outside for a cigarette. I don't believe that restaurants should have a 'Smoking Area' as smoke travels through the air by the process of diffusion and although invisible to the naked eye, many of the 2,000 or so toxins and poisons found in cigarette smoke will make their way to the dining and cooking areas.

No, smoking should not be allowed in restaurants. I am a smoker but I would be really offended if someone smoked whilst I was eating. I live in New Zealand where smoking is banned in pubs, restaurants and cafes. As a smoker I have no objection to this, it makes the place much fresher and I certainly do not mind going outside to smoke.

No.
No one has the right to inflict poisons on other people. If it were only a question of individual rights, it would be ok, but since it affects the health of other people, then it shouldn't be allowed.
Even when smoking is confinted to a separate room, there is no sure way to prevent the smoke from seeping into other parts of the building.

no so pointless. they're either eating or smoking. even if there is a separate section, it's not really separate, because it goes around the building. not saying that they don't have a right to smoke, but they don't have to do it when they're dining. they should get out their phone and find something else to entertain themselves as they wait for their food to come like the rest of us.

Smoking should not be allowed anywhere it is a deadly addiction and people should realize this before it is way to late. Smoking in restaurants and getting smoke all over the food and you and your clothes what a discussing thought. I would not go into a restaurant that allowed smoking. I have a friend who smokes and he leaves and go outstide. Where I live you have to smoke outside there is no smoking anywhere. There is even no smoking apartment building. That is how much damage or second hand smoke can do a person. Has anyone heard of the word "Cancer" heloooooooooooooooooooooooo
