On and off, one of my Opaline Gouramis sits underneath the heater. What does it mean? Is he sick? Or is he just cold?? Please help!

P.S.-5 gallon tank holds:
-1 Plecostomus
-2 Neon Tetras
-2 Red Serpaes (look like barbs, kinda)
-2 Zebra Danios
-2 Opaline Gouramis

First off, your tank is way over stocked. Secondly you have a mix of cold and warm water fish. your Zebras are cold water.

Even though you see them as small fish, they will all grow.

your gouramis could be hiding since there isn't enough space for all of them in the tank. If he is eating I wouldn't worry. Check him over for any signs of disease.

your tank is EXTREMELY overstocked. and i can not stress that enough. im really surprised you can even fit that many fish in a 5 gallon tank. the gourami is stressed out, most likely from ammonia or nitrite poisoning. the pleco(if its common) will need a 55 gallon. tetras and danios need to be in a school in order to be happy. and a school would require: for neons-10 gallons, for danios-20 gallons. the red serpae is a type of tetra, so that goes for them too. opaline ( known as three-spot) gouramis also need a 55 gallon. you NEED a bigger tank or you need to return your fish. it is not fair for them to be in such a tiny tank. maybe you could have meant 55 gallon. if you did (which im HOPING you meant 55, not 5), try a water change and test for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. get ammonia and nitrite down to 0, and nitrate no more and 40.

i saw someone say zebra danios are cold water fish.. NOT TRUE. all danios are tropical fish, and do best in a temp of around 74 degrees.

wow that is an overstocked tank! you opalines alone would need about 10 gallons.

fish stocking takes into account the amount of poop a fish makes as to the size of the tank. for those fish you would really need about 20 gallons.

gouramis are very chill fish -- they like to sit and hang out and not do much -- especially in a small tank where they don't have much room to swim.

the good news is there are a couple gouramis that do great in 5 gallons -- dwarf gouramis and honey grouramis would be fine in there. so when you restock think about just like 2 gouramis with a small piece of driftwood and a plant or two. make the aquarium look nice and you won't want to add so many fish.

tetras like to big in big groups. its how they defend themselves. without a group of friends they stress out and die early.

a pleco grows to fit a 100 gallon tank. i wish fish stores would check tank sizes before they sell fish.

Yea as identified by other members here your way overstocked my friend, your basically killing your fish with ammonia. You have just not been exposed to the simple rules...

Basically in a tank you can have 1" of fish per gallon (remember that's at adult hood) your pleco... will grow over that 5"'s so.. really you should Just keep a pleco in there and that will be too small of a tank for it.

I'd suggest buying a new upgraded tank quickly 33 gallons at least, it will provice better and easier cleaning and maintanance believe it or not.

As for your Gouramis it's prob getting sick and will eventually die if nothing is done.
