What do you think about giving money to charity? Do you think it is easier to give to charity when the people who are suffering are far away and cannot be seen, or easier to give to people you see on the streets. Do you think it is right to give to charity? If a person in need receives your money, based on this thinks, I can support a child, has a child, the money dries up and the child dies... do you think charity is to blame?

Charity (aka Daan in Hinduism) as practiced today is not what it is supposed to be! Most human beings distort the meaning of charity Daan. In Hinduism right charity is one... the giver of which always remains unknown. It has been rightly said that if the right hand gives charity... the left must always remain unaware! Charity never demands advertising!
I distinctly remember attending world philosophers’ conference in 1997 at Pune. It was there I came to know that institutions world over had so much faith in Mr. Claes Nobel, the nephew of Alfred Nobel... the man who instituted the Noble prize... almost hundred million dollars was pledged with Mr. Nobel for the sake of charity to the needy.
I wanted to know the means to the fund. One of the fund managers pointed out that 30% amount went to the kitty of the managers... is that charity what we really practice in life! It is putting the whole institution to shame. Charity always is a one-sided affair! Name and fame carry no meaning in the field of charity! There are many who donate in charities with the condition that their name would never be divulged to anybody.
Charity is what is practiced by John Templeton foundation. They donate for a cause... the welfare of the community and mankind is above all. They guidelines for all donations are clear and fixed. Their charities truly are benevolent and for the benefit of mankind! There is no room for misconceptions or misgivings! They mean... what they say!
On the contrary Bill & Melinda Gates foundation does charity for earning name and fame! They have clearly spelt out on their web site that no religious donations would ever be made. It is for the simple reason... they do not know whom to trust in the maze of so many religious trusts world over... agreed! What of the field of spirituality... the path of pure wisdom where I expect them to make sizeable contribution? More on Daan Charity - http://www.godrealized.com/daan_charity.html

If you have to calculate about charity, forget it. It no longer is charity if it comes with such reluctance. Charity is an old world meaning love of your fellow man. You cannot give with strings attached, stipulating how the money will be spent, unless you want to make sure an alcoholic doesn't spend it on booze (you take him or her to a restaurant or store).
Some charities are just rackets and hardly any of the money reaches the intended. Check them out.

Anything has pros and cons.
Charity reinforces the status quo. Charity creates dependence. Charity helps reinforce a class system with haves and have nots. Charity leaves many with an expectation of being provided for rather than self-sufficiency.
Any act of kindness is more beneficial if it helps leads someone to self-sufficiency.
Charity can also be a form of guilt and the experience of pity.

What? I don't get the last part. It sounds like your saying that if we help the poor, as Jesus demands, "when I was naked, you did not cloth me.....that which you do to these, the least, my brothers, you do it unto me." We are actually killing them? Are you Hindu and talking about Karma, maybe? They deserve to suffer so let them? More input, please?
