The problem is if you use a Windows tool to reformat, it will be very easy to recover everything back after the format. If totally erasing the hard drive is important, I would download an ISO image of SystemRescueCD -- one of several bootable CDs for Linux. The SystemRescueCD will come with gParted. gParted is a graphical representation of the partition(s) on your hard drive. Put a couple of new partitions on the drive with that tool -- format to ext3 (a linux file format). Merge the partitions back to one, format to NTSF and one more time, reformat to ext3 with a couple of new partitions.

The partitioning is very important. And, if you can format the MBR -- the first 2-4 meg on the drive, that is the best of all.

In truth, it takes 99 reformats to completely wipe out a disk so that even Federal forensic tools are delegated to worthless efforts. Reformatting linux on top of Win is a great scrambler though. THAT disc rescue program, one that will sniff a soup mixture of two OS hasn't been written yet.
