It's something I've always wanted to do so I am thinking of doing a course held at my local sewing shop.i just want to know is it easy to pick up?how long did it take you to feel confident in what you were doing?at the moment i just want to learn how to sew hem's etc(my hubby spends a fortune paying someone else to do this!)but eventually I'd love to make clothes for myself and my family

Like anything else, it takes a dedication in the learning process.
Hemming is easy. Small repairs are easy. Putting together clothes from simple patterns are easy. Each and every pattern you buy comes with very detailed instructions, from cutting out the material to the final finishing processes. Following those instructions is just a step-by-step process.
The only difficult part comes in if you want to DESIGN your own fashions, and need to figure out your OWN patterns. For that you have to be able to think like an engineer--but your medium of choice is cloth!
To date, I have had over 50 years of sewing experience. I enjoy creating clothes for myself and my family with my own hands. The only problem I have is knowing when to stop.

Great for you when I was young at home I made a dress in sewing class and then never stopped sewing. I don't sew as much as I used too. some times learning to sew requires alot of patience but it is always worth it. People call me and ask to hem pants too. they just like how I do it. Also having a good machine will help too. Good Luck

You will first learn the basics.. such as different types of stitches...how to use a sewing machine...etc.....then you will learn the next step...like sewing buttons on....hemming etc.....and then probably next step would be how to use pattern to make things....and then eventually you will be able to make clothes. I grew up with my grandma sewing thigns ALL the time.....but i took a beginner class in highschool and those were basically the steps we went through. Good luck!! And have fun!!!

Try the book 'Vogue Sewing rev. ed.' There are many sewing centres such as Johnson's SC or Quilters Heaven that offer free classes with the purchase of a machine. Many options. Any reputable pattern company such as Simplicity patterns are so well put together it is virtually impossible to make mistakes. Burda offers many patterns for men too.

It is fun, but sewing is a pretty expensive hobby. I've dumped hundreds into a couple skirts and crafts that are pretty much worthless to anyone else.
