I agree with pathfinder. Nowadays no company likes to have aged people even if there is all qualifications.

Its sad and immigrants get the job because they are ready to work for long hours at a lesser salary.

I hope God will show you a way and don't please lose hope.

I am 51 now and about a year ago the company I was with "restructured" the middle management level. There were 220 managers in the same level as me affected. There were 340 new positions created at a similar level, just different job descriptions. 30% of the 220 (including me) did not get offered one of the new positions. Instead, the hiring managers picked their friends from other areas. It's kinda fun to still have some friends there and hear that the company is struggling with a ROI with the new position.

Anyway, I too had a difficult time finding a new position. I have a great resume with a lot of good experience. I finally went out and got my insurance license and joined a company as an independent agent and now know that I will make exactly what I am worth, as I am paid by what I produce.

If you are interested in at least looking at it, let me know. You can do it from anywhere in the US.

Starting your own business is the only way left to anyone over 45 to continue earning a living. It's very hard to find a handy man who actually knows what he is doing. I wonder if the people who hire unskilled immigrants are really satisfied with the work that they do. They probably don't get any repeat business. Try using your skills from the printing business to create advertising to show how you can do a better job for your clients. No matter what career you choose there will always be people with bad attitudes. As you build your client base you will find your repeat customers will treat you with respect. Try offering a discount or a rebate to customers who give you a referal that hires you. Only if you actually get the job. One of the things that bugs me about people that do repairs is that they leave such a mess. If you clean up the work area after you are done you will find your clients much happier with your work. If you are not one of those messy people please excuse the last part of this.

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Do not blame this on immigrants - this is not an immigration issue. Blame Wal-Mart (not really). How many of us shop there? The desire to buy crap with the lowest price drives everyone to find faster and cheaper ways of doing things.

Figure out what you are good at and consider how to market yourself based on quality or a specialized skill. If you can not convince someone why you are worth more $$ than someone else, than you are not worth more.

You can not and do not want to compete in a labor market where the supply of cheaper labor is high or you can be easily replaced with technology. Jeez - look at accountants. How many people use turbo-tax instead of a CPA now? That is not an immigration issue - it is a cost/value issue.

Good luck!

welcome to the new economy. i'm about to loose my job at Intel and i'm 55 years old and the prospect of snagging a high paying job is nill. although forecasters are saying that skilled technicians are becoming scarce again, the age thing is the problem in this youth oriented society. besides experience demands compensation while inexperiance is cheap. i;m going to start refinishing vintage and antique furniture with focus on old radios.

Although age discrimination is SUPPOSE to be ILLEGAL, it is not in reality. You could be the most skillful man in your trade, but companies would rather have some mediocre young guy filling the position.
