Alrighty, I am going to disagree with the previous postings.

Dr. Who is a freaking love story, a damn good one I might add. Everything else, time travel, monster fighting, various struggles, is just window dressing.

The Doctor is the the last of his kind, he is really all alone in the universe. Rose, on the surface, is a typical young woman with superficial concerns and desires. As the show progresses you find out that she is brave, smart, and caring. In the end, the Doctor lowers his defenses and admits his love just in time to lose her forever while saving the universe. This is why he prefers to try and maintain a comfortable distance between himself and any traveling companions.

Dr. Who is a timelord who can travel through space and time in the Tartus which is a superdimensional time machine disguised as a phone booth.

Its a Brittish comedy and takes a little getting used to if you are not accustomed to Brittish television.

I love the show and, you should know, he can be reincarnated a certain number of times and a different actor comes into portray Dr. Who every time he gets killed.

He doesn't get killed often but, well, you have to watch the show.

It is a time travel fantasy show and The Doctor is a Timelord usually with an attractive female sidekick. It is suitable for children but not really intended as a children's show. It is a BBC show from the sixties now revived. There are a large assortment of villains but the most famous ones are the Daleks
