Jell-o or gelatin

Actually, jam, jelly, and jello are three different things here in the States. Jam is what you are referring to as English jam. Jelly is similar to jam, but is stiffer. Jello is a gelatin dessert.

American jam has pieces of fruit in it. Strawberry jam has the fruit in it, for example, but strawberry jelly doesn't. In jam making, I crush the berries, cook it and preserve it.

American jelly is strained of the pieces of fruit and then preserved. When I make apple jelly, I can boil up the peelings, strain the liquid and use the liquid to make jelly.

The other is gelatin or Jell-o (manuafacturer name, although there are other companies who market gelatin dessert packages).

Jam and jelly are two different things. Jam has fruit in it (actual pieces) and jelly is made with the juice only. I do think you're thinking of Jello/gelatin.

Jelly and Jam are two entirely different things. Jelly is kind of light and slickery and Jam is thick and sweeter.

i'm going to go ahead and assume you mean jelly (the dessert) to mean gelatin.

in which case, we americans call it Jell-o after the most famous brand of packaged instant fruit-flavored gelatin.
