We can only forgive those who have sinned against us so the former is it.

However, did you hear about the boy who came home from Sunday School and told his parents that he knew God's name. The parents were stunned and asked him "OK what is it?"
He answered that the teacher had told him "Our Father Who art in heaven Harold be thy name"

As a child, I learned it as: "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." I think it may be differently written depending on which denomination or religion you are. I have also heard "debts" and "debtors" in the place of "trespassers". But I think using the word "sins" the correct way to write it is: "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." On wikipedia, they say it's "trespasses."

I always went with the second one, but the meanings are essentially the same. You are asking God to forgive you your sins as much as you forgive someone who has done you wrong.
