Whether good or bad, of all the world leaders, former leaders, and other important figures alive today, who will prove to have had the biggest impact on the course of human events?

A few years ago, my answer would have been revolutionary former South African president Nelson Mandela.

Unfortunately, George W. Bush may ultimately be considered the most influential, but will likely be described as "infamous" for his actions.

Right now it has to be Bill Gates. I know being American I am very limited in terms of the spectrum..I have to work with. I wish I knew about more of the World's important people.

But it seems to me his techno contributions already
and the way his wife and he have decided to address their philantrophic legacy..

you have to consider said accomplishments as having touched more of us..and had a greater influence on the world.

A scientist or writer that we may never have heard of at this point will be the most influential person. I would bet on it. Mandela and Bush will 100 years from now be of interest to historians and the bane of schoolkids who will have to be tested on their names.

Benedict XVI

Love him or hate him, this guy has a grasp of Western culture, its strengths and philosophical diseases, like no other. His influence on the direction of the Church will in turn change the course that international politics takes in many respects. He is taking over exactly where JPII left off although many cannot yet see this. Wait and see.

Al Gore. Because he will be blamed for hyping an entire world economy into self destruction by trying to slow down or prevent a naturally occurring environmental warming cycle. And inventing the internet.
