They try to make the ornaments be as light as possible. Think of how much they weight when 50s of them hanging on one dying, bone-skinny Christmas tree. Plus i think it's more of a spiritual thing that the ornament represents: the more fragile, breakable, light they are, the more valueable and meaningful thoughts they carry.
