Area 51 does exist, that portion of the map is relatively empty and is broken up into numbered area to keep track of this wasteland, hence the number (located between area 50 and 52). There is a military base there and it is guarded closely, as it is a test/ proving ground. As far as aliens, such as been said, and only those with a need to know are privy to that. With the recent request of some governments to all governments to release any information that might help in some way with current issues regarding global warming (any extraterrestrial technology), we can only hope that anymore secrecy be lifted and truthfulness be extended.

Area 51 does exist but its not an aliens depot
They test new airplanes there which needs to be kept secret for as long as possible. Planes like SR-71, F-117 and B2 are all thought to be tested at there before they were made public.

And now I have a question: How many billions of dollars did the US government have to spend relocating the highly sensitive and top secret projects to some other location because of a couple dozen wackos who will believe any nonsense they hear and who kept sneaking around the facility, taking pictures and spying and attracting all sorts of media attention to it?
