Actually Ulysses S. Grant is rated in the bottom 5 of most people's surveys as a president. In fact his war heroics and a weak Democratic party helped Grant get into the Presidency. Once in office , his administration was rocked with scandals and with the Panic of 1873 probably sealed that fate. One saving grace for Grant was his Secretary of State Hamilton Fish and beause of him grant avoids from being at the bottom of the list.

General Ulysses S Grant was fair to middling, oddly enough and this will PO a lot of people but a lot like President Bill Clinton. Grant gave America eight years of uneasy peace, delegated a lot of authority to his friends & cronies, was personally popular, possesed a rougeish charm, made more o-k decisions than horrific blunders, and in fact left office larhely intact, attacks on his reputation would not surface with a vengeance until three years later.

Grant was o-k certainly not the worst merely the first of a long line of competent Presidents during an Era when Congress was Determined to Be the Power in the US of A. But just merely competent and the turmoil of the late 1970's and early 80's was the bitter legacy however much as now President and Congress shared in the irresponsibility the inabaility to hammer out workable solutions for millions of people to live together in a single nation. Etc.
