because they need space for containing eggs for reproduction. the workers do not reproduce and so do not need space for containing eggs.

The sole purpose of the queen ant is reproduction. Hence, 24/7, she is continually being fed and laying eggs. Worker ants put the newly laid eggs in chambers and care for them.
