no drive will read a blank cd because there is nothing to read

Using WMP? Blue Ray technology and DRM will shut that down, and they can. Why? cause you don't own that OS, you never did, you never can.
Get Linux or Win2k, and never go above SP3.
Or it could be a missing or improperly installed driver. Download the latest drivers for that unit, print out the How to Install this driver, usually says Old driver must be Un-Installed for this one to work, and gives directions how to do that, some can be upgraded, depends on alot of different dlls and other junk.

try a differnet brand of blank cd. Sounds like your cd doesnt support the brand you have.
