This is the old "Spider and Fly" plot. There's a folk tale about a couple who keep wishing until they rule the world and that's not good enough for them. So they end up with nothing. It's more of a moral than a plot really-books like "Great Expectations" and "Jane Eyre" could lead you to this conclusion. There must be hundreds more.
