This is like a discussion of the meaning of life, or at least in part. To advance technology we need to advance our technology to produce more energy in a more efficient way. Improved technology means we have to work less on developing basic needs such as fresh water, food, shelter and so on and that leads into other pursuit such as arts and sciences. The discoveries in sciences lead to development of newer technologies and so on.
