He needed to die. He painted his own death. Peter and Sylar still have future painting powers though, so we didn't lose those brilliant glimpses into the furture.

no it was an necessary death for the story. it wouldn't have been as good if he lived. and plus, peter can still see into the future. and sylar too.

Somebody had to die to create tension. He was more of an 'observer' than an active hero, so it would make sense that they might kill him off.

No we knew all along he would die, and after he killed his ex g/f he had nothing left.
