Achrimsdale has the right idea. Most likely you've managed to get some malicious software running on your pc. All the programs he suggested are easy and free, and you'd be best served getting them.
You'll find them by googling their names easy enough.

You may also simply have too many legitimate programs trying to start upon windows login. I'd suggest taking a look at your task bar and watching for the probably 10-15 icons that appear. Those are memory resident programs you likely don't need hogging all your memory before you even run them. Try and disable their automatic startups, if they're not necessary to your computer's operation. Failing that you may remove them by editing your startup items from:
START, RUN, type "msconfig" (without quotes), use the startup tab on system configuration utility.

Nearly everything can be safely unchecked, aside from any software required for your internet connection, which you'd likely recognize by name. You'll need to restart for changes to take effect.

I also think that windows does do a fairly good job of managing virtual memory, so unless you're really sure you're seeing an improvement, you may want to set it back. Too much virtual memory isn't necessarily a good thing, as it is slower to access than RAM. With older computers the suggestion used to be to increase it, but I have seen the opposite (or even disabling it) recommended for newer models. Probably best to leave as is.

Good luck.

Increasing your virtual memory will not help speed the computer up. If anything it will slow the computer. Best to let Windows manage your virtual memory and increase your physical memory for a faster loading machine. If you've only just gone on-line then almost every thing will be trying to do updates and that will slow your connection.
If you have loads of programs running in your system tray then you might want to use Start> Run and type msconfig to switch off the things you dont need in the startup tab.
Hope all that makes sense to you.

If Task Manager won't open and regedit won't run. A virus is now controlling your computer and virus scan may have been disabled. If you are using Win XP, try repairing it:

Then when it loads Windows, go to safe mode and scan for virus, preferably twice w/ different anti virus.
