I currently live in the United States but am planning on buying a home in London? Are the prices too high to buy in the metro area or is it cheaper in the suburbs? I just want to be near all the hot spots in london.

Depends on what you mean by the metro area - do you mean just central London - or are you using metro to mean the area served by the London Underground.

You should be aware that there are virtually NO houses in the central London area - the very few that there are are far to expensive for anyone except the very rich to live - apartments and flats yes - but at a price.

Greater London as served by the underground system is a very large area - just think of a large circle around 25 miles diameter - prices vary greatly across that area..most of the population live out side the central area - in fact a very large proportion of people who work in London live miles outside of the London area

As a guide you can buy the house next door to me which is a 3 bedroom semi-detached house in a residential area aound 12 miles from central London for around $500,000. (around 1/2 million dollars)

You're living in a dream world I'm afriad. I assume you mean zone 1 of London, where there will be no houses to buy (or even rent) but flats and appartments. I was living right in the south of zone 1 and up the road was a block of apartments (Parliament view however) which were going for £1 million a piece. As for living near the 'hot spots' there are too many to mention and aren't as close to each other as you'd imagine. Sorry about that, but moving to London will be a huge reality check for you and your finances (multiply everything by two for British prices).
