theyre called ratlines ( pronounced rhat-lins)...rope lashed at right angles to the shrouds....the heavy ropes or steel cable that run up the mast and hold it up.......forming a ladder so crew can go aloft and deal with the sails.....or swing across to another ship with a cutlass in their teeth screaming ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!
