There is a storm of controversy over President Bush’s plans to appoint James W. Holsinger as the United States Surgeon General. In a press release from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Holsinger’s opposition to gay people is outlined. The article indicates Holsinger “promoted ‘reparative therapy,’” which is alarming. If Holsinger believes in ex-gay therapy, the United States could be in the position of having a Surgeon General who is endorsing what is generally considered to be unethical medical/therapeutic practices. Given the fact that the Surgeon General promotes the general health and well-being of all people, the possible appointment of a man who might still hold potentially therapeutically harmful beliefs about gay people causes concern. People can change their opinions. We hope James Holsinger has changed his opinion regarding ex-gay counselling. We are not certain what Holsinger’s current beliefs are regarding ex-gay counselling. We encourage residents of the United States to research into Holsinger’s beliefs, and to contact their Representative, Senator, and the White House with any concerns or opinions they have about Holsinger serving as the Surgeon General. The Stop Hate web site page “How You Can Help has a section on political action. In that section, one can click to email the White House. There are also links to Representatives and Senators.

Hello -

I have to agree with French Cuffs - this seems familiar. Didn't Bush stir up a gay issue to distract the American public from the finacial troubles in the country, the war in Iraq, and how he's profiting off the price of oil while Americans are shelling out $3-$4 a gallon for gas? Bush knows that Americans have a knee-jerk reaction to gay issues. It always stirs up some large public debate, and he'll use it to its fullest extent.

But if it isn't - that is a scary step backwards for gay rights in this country. My only hope is that this guy doesn't make it and that the House and Senate have better judgement than our President.

I've read a little on this guy. And I feel rather certain that he won't make it past any Senate hearings or Congressional hearings or whatever for that matter. I get this sense that his nomination is a ruse to anger and distract people from other more important issues. Its rather apropos for the Bush Administration to pull this kind of trash.

I have to agree with French Cuffs as well. I seriously doubt this jerk could make it past any senate or congressional hearings. I mean really...what is Bush thinking? he isn't! he keeps making one blunder after another...his approval rate keeps plummeting....and then he makes yet another ridiculous and controversial proposal. if he got his way on everything, we'd probably be having witch hunts and lynchings and burning people at the stake in the town square! for God's sake, people....what did you see in this man? and who paid off the electoral college to make him president when he never won the popular vote? his whole presidency is sham and a shambles.

It's important to contact Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and other Senators on the committee which is planning to interview this quack doctor, prior to confirmation.

The only comforting thing is that this might indicate that the Bush administration has finally lost their minds, because a show-down with Hillary and Barack is the last thing Bush needs, with his ratings in the toilet.

But this is just another nail in the coffin of the religious and political extremists who currently hold our Whitehouse and country hostage to their anti-modernist and hateful agendas.

Just compare former Surgeon General Everett C. Koop to this quack nominated by Bush, and you see how far America has fallen under King George.

Ha! That makes me laugh. How on earth would they enforce that? Gay hunts? "Grab your torch and pitchfork!" I can't believe that people can be this close-minded. Did you know scientists are working on a new vaccine that will protect you from catching gay? The development of a device called "Gaydar" is also in the works.
