It's not dangerous at all. You might get sprayed with some foam from the resulting geyser, but it washes off.....trust me. To clarify a previous user's answer, it does not have to be diet soda, it's just that diet soda doesn't contain syrups or sugars that turn sticky and are difficult to clean up. Here's how the trick works: Mentos contain a protien (usually guar gum or gum arabic) that breaks down the surface tension of the bubbles in soda. Thus, when the protein is introduced into the soda, the bubbles will rapidly expand and escape the bottle in the easiest way possible (path of least resistance). The structure of the mentos also helps, as mentos have a very rough surface for the bubbles to adhere to. so, anyway, it's a fun little thing to try, and it's completely harmless (do it outside!!)

yep and the results are really cool...if you want an even bigger eruption add two or more, cap it shake it up and then remove the cap while you run away...outside of course.
