The answer is apparently not so simple. Not all countries in Europe use the same system.
Some countries use
one billion = one thousand million (10^9)
and some use
one billion = one million million (10^12)
I'm not sure about Australia.

The original meaning of one billion was 1,000,000 million.
Later on some countries changed the meaning to 1,000 million.
In England both is used as far as I know.
